apibrėžtis Sporto šaka, pasižyminti gimnastikos fizinių pratimų įvairove ir sudėtingumu. Sportinė gimnastika apima laisvuosius pratimus (judesius rankomis, liemeniu, galva, kojomis, įvairias stovėsenas, atremtis, posūkius, atvirus šuolius, persivertimus), atraminius šuolius ir pratimus ant gimnastikos prietaisų (skersinių, lygiagrečių, žiedų, arklio – vyrams, lygiagrečių, buomo – moterims). Pirmosios sportinės gimnastikos varžybos surengtos XIX a. 6-ąjį dešimtmetį. Į olimpinių žaidynių programą sportinė gimnastika įtraukta nuo 1896 m. Pasaulio čempionatai rengiami nuo 1903 m., Europos – nuo 1955 m. Lietuvoje pradėta kultivuoti nuo 1945 m.
